I decided to make this blog on how to turn off double sided printing mac after a printer problem at work. I was in the office with my team recently, and we had just got a new printer. I'm usually the person everyone comes to for technical things, so when it started causing issues, it fell on me to fix it.
With the new printer, we had to install a new driver and settings onto our Macs and PCs. My friend came up to me saying she couldn't print, so I said not to worry and that I would sort it out because I'm usually the techie person. I thought this would only take a couple of minutes. I set up the new printer on my Mac. Usually, by default, it prints one-sided.
I printed out a few copies of the documents my friend wanted, and they kept printing double sided. I was confused because my settings are usually one-sided, and it had never been double sided in the past. So I did what you usually do: I typed it into Google and had a look at the AI overviews for the settings. That didn't work.
Then I went into Google and looked at all the pages. I looked at the Mac help area. I looked at Reddit. I looked at the printer website. I trawled through pages, and this must have taken about an hour just trying to diagnose what was wrong with my system. Whenever I typed in how to turn off double sided printing mac it just gave me instructions that weren't available on my Mac. I also had my other friends looking at this for me, and I still couldn't understand it.
I eventually went into Gemini and ChatGPT, and again they gave me all these instructions. Some of them were PDFs, and those settings just weren't on my computer. So frustrating!
So next I went to my it person and asked them how to turn off double sided printing on my mac. I had to do the whole thing of submitting a ticket and waiting for a response. Luckily, my team is pretty fast, and they came back to me very promptly as soon as I gave them some context of what I'd done so far. It's always good to give context to the specialist. They solved it within 5 easy steps that I could do myself.
Because of that, this is why I wrote the blog on how to turn off double sided printing, because you may have a similar problem to me, and this was such a fast diagnosis once you actually knew what to do.
Step one on how to turn off your double sided printing in mac is to press the Command+P button to go to your print preview option. Pick the printer that you're using, hopefully you should only see one option for your printer, or if you're in a big office, you might see multiple printers. Go to the one that you want to print to that's closest to you.
Now do not press Print if you're having the issue on double sided printing. Press Print using the system dialogue; that's towards the bottom of the screen.
It will open up a page a little bit similar to this. Again, check that your printer name at the top is correct, because different printers have different settings.
From there, scroll down, and it should say layout, paper handling, print options; hit that printer options button.
What you'll notice is that it opens up and says something like colour matching, finishing. Hit that finishing button. This is the magic button that I was searching everywhere for. I couldn't believe how easy this was. You'll see that my setting was stuck on 2 sided printing.
So how to turn off double sided printing or 2-sided printing on a Mac? Click that drop-down, and it will open up and say one-sided printing, 2-sided printing.
Hit one sided printing and press okay. From there, you can go ahead and print.
That's how easy it is to turn off double sided printing Mac version. This probably took me about one to 2 minutes in total once I knew the option, by going to a digital specialist. But I'd already taken a few hours trying to do it myself. Hopefully this helps you if you're having similar issues on your new printer.
Now I'll put in a couple of extra steps because that was just one way of how to turn off double sided printing. You may notice it keeps printing double sided afterwards even though you've turned it off. So you can actually set the default settings.
The way to do that is to go back to your print preview button and then go to Print using system dialogue. Then you'll see your printer at the top; make sure it's the printer that you use. Then you will select Presets and you'll see it's got some default settings. What you can do is save the current settings as a preset.
Follow the options; follow the steps on how to turn off double sided printing, select the one-sided printing, then go back and hit Save current settings as a preset. Put the preset name; call it whatever you like, new settings, this is the way going forward, et cetera. Then press okay. From there, you'll be able to print one-sided if you like.
If you want to print double sided just make another setting and name it double-sided printing, just to make it easier for you.
Hopefully your Mac already defaults to one-sided; however, in my case it was set to double-sided. Really easy steps: go to your Print Preview button, go to Print using System Dialogue. Go to Printer Options, hit Finishing. Make sure your print style says one-sided printing and press OK.
This is what I ran into initially. All the blogs and websites were saying as soon as you hit print preview there'll be a double-sided option or a single-sided option in the print preview. That's not always the case. Different printers have different drivers and settings. So follow the steps above to make sure you've turned on double-sided printing or turned it off.
This was the exact issue that I had to solve. It was all to do with my new printer that was installed. I put in a new driver, and it automatically defaulted to printing double sided. So I had to turn it off and save it as a preset.
If you're in your Word application, press command p to get yourself into the print preview and follow the instructions from above. Print using the system dialogue; hit Printer Options, hit Finishing, and turn off double sided printing on Mac. Go to Presets, save current settings as a preset, and press okay.
