If you've just started out on Pinterest, or looking to find out more, or you’re aiming to drive more views and traffic to your pins and website, this guide is for you.
We'll share practical tips for growing your Pinterest presence, with a focus on SEO to help your content stand out.
We've included insights from our own experience and a mention of how The Digital Hub can enhance your Pinterest strategy. Let’s dive in.
Upgrade to a Pinterest Business Account
First things first, if you haven’t got a Pinterest Business Account, it’s worth upgrading!
The best part is it’s free, and provides access to Pinterest Analytics, which helps you understand what works and what doesn’t.
You can also enable Rich Pins, which link to your website and, in our experience, perform slightly better than standard pins by including extra details like product prices or article headlines. It’s a straightforward step to improve your results.
Create Visually Appealing Pins
Pinterest is a visual platform, so your pins need to look good. It's understandable that some of your early pins will be, frankly, dreadful.
If design isn’t your strength, try Canva, which offers a free trial and hundreds of Pinterest templates sized correctly for the platform (1000x1500 pixels is ideal).
You can create professional pins quickly using bold colours, clear text, and high-quality images to catch users’ attention as they scroll.
Photography
There are many sites where you can get free imagery to edit. However nothing can go past an original photoshoot of you and your products or services. The best part is you may old even need to do this once.
Capture a bunch of footage and even b-roll, just to have something to add to your creations. Do a test, see what performs the best.
This one is important if you are selling physical products, users want to visualise it, how does it look, how does it work, how can I use it, what is the packaging like.
Follow the 80/20 Rule for Repinning
A strategy that’s worked well for many is repinning other people’s content. Aim for an 80/20 split: 80% other people’s pins and 20% your own. This keeps your boards varied and active while attracting followers who see you’re sharing quality content in their niche.
Curating great pins builds trust and positions your profile as a valuable resource.
Optimise Boards and Pins for SEO
Pinterest functions as a visual search engine, so SEO is crucial. Optimise your Board Titles and Descriptions with relevant keywords. Use Pinterest Analytics to identify trending keywords in your niche.
For example, if you’re in home decor or interior design, you might find “boho living room ideas” performs well. Include these keywords naturally in board titles (e.g., “Boho Living Room Inspiration”) and descriptions.
Apply the same approach to your pins. Write pin descriptions with one or two relevant keywords and keep them engaging. For example: “Transform your space with these boho living room ideas. #BohoDecor #HomeInspo”. Avoid using more than two or three hashtags, as too many can seem spammy.
The Digital Hub can assist by researching top-performing keywords and crafting SEO-optimised descriptions to increase clicks.
Avoid Spamming Your Pins
Don’t post your pins to multiple boards at once. Pinterest’s algorithm dislikes spammy behaviour, and you could get flagged. Instead, pin to relevant boards gradually over time. Focus on quality rather than quantity.
Build a Following Strategically
Growing your audience early on can be challenging, but here’s a method that’s worked for me. Find the biggest accounts in your niche, such as influencers or brands with large followings. Visit their profile, check the Community tab, and look at their followers.
Follow around 50 of their followers at a time; about 20% may follow you back, as they’re already interested in your niche.
Spread this out, perhaps following 50 people three times a day, to avoid issues with Pinterest. Once you have a solid base of followers, boards, and pins, organic growth should begin.
Join Group Boards and Engagement Groups
Group Boards can significantly boost your exposure. Search for the best ones in your niche using terms like “[your niche] group board” in Pinterest’s search bar.
Request to join as a contributor and start pinning. Similarly, Pinterest Engagement Groups on platforms like Facebook are highly effective.
You share other members’ pins, and they reciprocate. Look for repin threads, clickthrough threads, or comment threads to increase engagement efficiently.
Use Automation Tools to Streamline Your Strategy
To scale your efforts, automation tools can save time and boost efficiency. While Pinterest has it's own scheduling functionality, you can't really do this in bulk or that far in advance, so it does have some limitations in that sense.
Tailwind Tribes is a great option, as it’s approved by Pinterest, ensuring your account stays safe.
You can schedule pins to post automatically to your boards on a loop, keeping your profile active without constant effort. Collaborative tribes allow you to share pins with others who repin your content, expanding your reach.
Tailwind’s Canva integration now also lets people design, then schedule Pins without downloads or tab juggling.
Other tools like Buffer and Hootsuite also support Pinterest scheduling, letting you plan pins across multiple boards with ease.
Later is another solid choice, offering a user-friendly interface for scheduling and analytics to track performance. These tools help maintain consistent posting, which is key to staying visible.
The Digital Hub can enhance your automation strategy by identifying high-performing communities and scheduling pins for optimal impact across these platforms.
Keep An Eye On The Analytics
Once you get in to regular posting and pinning, don't forget to check back to see what topics and post styles are working. There might be one area of interest that users are favouring over another. If so, maybe you can dive deeper in to that topic.
Think about other themes around that topic might work, and this will provide you with new avenues for content creation.
